Glenn's first words

Friday, October 30, 1998

After Thursday's Discovery launch, John Glenn's first conversation with mission control in Houston occurred about 5:30 p.m., three hours into the flight:

Glenn: Houston, this is PS2. . . . Just going by Hawaii, and that is absolutely gorgeous.

Mission control: (Robert Kirby): Roger that. Enjoy the show!

Glenn: Enjoy the show is right! This is beautiful! . . . It's a trite old statement but . . . Zero G and I feel fine! Today is beautiful and great, and Hawaii is . . . I can't even describe it.

Mission control: I think you'll be seeing that view a couple more times. (Glenn flew three orbits last time. This time, he'll get 144 trips around the world.)

Cmdr. Curt Brown: Let the record show that John has a smile on his face from one ear to the other, and we haven't been able to remove it yet.
