RISING SUN, Ind. -- A 41-year-old Aurora man apparently shot himself Thursday morning on Nelson Road after his vehicle was stopped for a traffic violation.
The Ohio County Sheriff's Department said David L. Mendenhall, of the 7200 block of Hartford Ridge Road, died from a gunshot wound to the head. A deputy saw the man's vehicle go through a stop sign at Hartford Pike and Nelson Road, about 6 miles west of Rising Sun, about 6:12 a.m., the sheriff's department said.
When the deputy stopped the vehicle on Nelson Road near the Ohio-Dearborn County line, he heard what he thought was a vehicle backfire. As he approached the vehicle, he found Mr. Mendenhall leaning against the window with a handgun in his hand.
