Driver pleads guilty in crash that killed friend

The Cincinnati Enquirer -->

COVINGTON -- An Ohio man faces between one and five years in prison after pleading guilty to reckless homicide and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

The charges stem from a May car crash that resulted in a friend's death.

Michael Bell, 22, of Springfield, Ohio, is scheduled for sentencing Dec. 7 before Judge Patricia Summe of Kenton Circuit Court after entering the guilty plea Monday.

The Kenton Commonwealth Attorney's office has proposed the one- to five-year term as part of Mr. Bell's plea agreement, but it's up to the judge to accept it.

Mr. Bell pleaded guilty a day before his trial was to begin. He was facing a charge of second-degree manslaughter and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

He was behind the wheel May 16 when Kentucky State Police Trooper Aaron Beighle tried to pull him over for DUI.

The car sped through three cities before bursting into flames after careering through an intersection at the end of Highland Pike in Fort Wright.

Mr. Bell's friend, Jeremiah J. Fraley, 20, also of Springfield, died in the wreck. Another passenger and the trooper were not seriously injured.
