Wednesday, November 11, 1998

Two former firefighters in Hamilton County's Miami Township were sentenced to probation Tuesday for misconduct on the job.

Common Pleas Judge Richard Niehaus ordered brothers Kevin and Jason Hughes to serve two years on probation, which will include community service work at the Shriners Burns Institute. He also told both men they could never again hold public office or a position of "public trust."

Kevin Hughes pleaded guilty last month to theft and tampering with records, while his brother pleaded guilty to theft and complicity to commit arson.

The meeting will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the OKI boardroom, Suite 400, 801-B W. Eighth St., downtown.

Drivers can use Levee Way and the Race Street overpass to get between Third Street and Pete Rose Way.

A Hamilton County grand jury indicted Mr. Writesel on charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggravated vehicular homicide and aggravated vehicular assault.

He is accused of driving his car into a crowd of people standing outside a Spring Grove Avenue bar on Oct. 25. The victim, Janice Redmon, was treated for her injuries but died days later at home. Prosecutors say a coroner's exam shows those injuries caused her death.

Lebanon city manager resigns after a decade

LEBANON - Under pressure from some council members, City Manager Richard Hayward resigned Tuesday after more than a decade in the county seat's top position.

The surprise resignation culminated behind-the-scenes negotiations with council members who were disappointed with Mr. Hayward's job performance. It came nearly a year after some council members openly called to remove Mr. Hayward.

Mr. Hayward, whose annual salary is $70,380, will remain city manager until May 31, or until he takes another position. He has an interview this month for city manager of Delaware, Ohio.

His official reason for resigning was to look for other employment opportunities. Mr. Hayward had no comment when asked whether council pressured him to resign.
