Feds approve device tried out at Christ

Thursday, November 12, 1998

Nine months ago, Hamilton resident Bernard Davis became the first man in America to receive an experimental type of coronary stent. Now the device is part of mainstream treatment for heart disease.

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the wide-scale use of the ACS MultiLink DUET stent, made by Guidant Corp. National clinical trials of the device were led by the Lindner Center for Clinical Cardiovascular Research at Christ Hospital.

Stents are tiny metal mesh tubes that doctors insert to prop open clogged blood vessels in the heart and other parts of the body. The DUET stent is significantly smaller and more flexible than previous stent designs, which makes it possible to use the device in many more hard-to-reach places.

Since approval, doctors at Christ Hospital have inserted the device in 29 patients, including seven the first day it was approved, said Dr. Dean Kereiakes, medical director of the Lindner Center and principal investigator for the national clinical trial.

Taft will get say in new superintendent

COLUMBUS - The state school board has decided Gov.-elect Bob Taft will have a part in the selection of a new state school superintendent. The board decided Tuesday to invite Mr. Taft to take part in discussions and interviews as it searches for a replacement for John Goff, who is retiring.

Mr. Taft won't have a vote, since the superintendent serves at the pleasure of the board.

Mr. Taft and his Democratic opponent, Lee Fisher, both asked the board to postpone its selection of a superintendent until after the Nov. 3 election so the governor-elect could participate.

The board initially refused. But the process has taken longer than anticipated, so the panel decided to ask Mr. Taft to take part, board President Jennifer Sheet said.

Lesbian couple both want to be 'mother'

CANTON, Ohio - An 8-year-old girl raised from birth by a lesbian couple should legally be able to call both women "mother," an attorney for the couple told a state appeals court.

"It's in their daughter's best interest for the court to recognize that both women have been mothers in every sense of the word," said Patricia Logue, the couple's attorney and a lawyer for the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund Inc.

Ms. Logue made the argument Tuesday before the Ohio 5th District Court of Appeals in Canton.

The case involves two Summit County women, one of whom is the biological mother. The child was conceived by artificial insemination. The two women filed a request in Summit County Probate Court in 1996 to allow the non-biological mother to adopt. The court turned them down, saying Ohio law requires one mother to give up her status as a parent before the other can adopt.
