WASHINGTON - Reps. John Boehner and J.C. Watts both claimed new endorsements Thursday in their race for a Republican House leadership position. Mr. Boehner, R-West Chester, is the Republican Conference chairman and is looking to hold onto that job in leadership elections on Wednesday.
He is being challenged by Mr. Watts of Oklahoma, the only African American among House GOP members.
Those endorsing Mr. Boehner's re-election Thursday were Republican Reps. Henry Hyde of Illinois, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee; William Thomas of California, chairman of the House Oversight Committee; Bob Stump of Arizona, chairman of the Veteran Affairs Committee; and Jim Saxton of New Jersey, chairman of the Joint Economic Committee.

Mr. Watts already had the endorsement of Bud Shuster, chairman of the Transportation Committee.
