In a game dominated by defense, turnovers proved crucial as Edgewood beat Teays Valley 3-0 in the first round of the Division III playoffs at Beavercreek High School.
Sophomore safety Brandon Osborne led the way on defense for Edgewood, intercepting three passes and recovering a fumble. On its first possession of the second quarter, Teays Valley appeared ready to score the game's first touchdown, driving down to the Edgewood 8-yard line. But Osborne picked up a Jeff Gambo fumble with eight minutes to play in the half.
"I was looking for the back and didn't see the ball come loose," Osborne said. "When I saw it on the ground, I just fell on it."
Edgewood's only points came on a first quarter field goal by kicker Josh Robertson. It was set up after Osborne's second interception.
"We knew coming in it would be a defensive battle," Edgewood coach Steve Channell said. "I told the kids at halftime that it could end up a 3-0 game decided by turnovers and field position."
Edgewood managed only 133 total yards of offense but limited Teays Valley to just 95 and six first downs.
David White led the way for the Cougars on offense, gaining 82 yards on 27 carries.
