Clermont seeks more state money

Friday, November 20, 1998

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

BATAVIA - An application for $550,000 in Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) funding was approved by Clermont County commissioners Wednesday - the second such application the commissioners have approved this year.

The $550,000 would be reserved to pay for part of a $1.2 million road and water system improvement project for Buckwheat Road in Miami Township. The rest of the money will come from a number of other sources.

Commissioners also passed tax abatements at three locations within the county's rural enterprise zone designed to stimulate business expansion and job growth.

In September, commissioners approved an application for $1.09 million in OPWC funds for four bridge replacement projects. They are:

  • Beechwood Road, Union Township, $158,000.

  • Big Indian Road, Monroe Township, $229,000.

  • Chapel Road, Batavia Township, $228,000.

  • Monterey-Maple Grove Road, Jackson Township, $479,000.

The September and most recent applications are under review by the OPWC.

The property tax abatements were approved for:

  • Hawks and Hawks Inc., a business printing company, for construction of a 15,000-square-foot facility for $922,625 in the Woodland Technical Center off Seabrook Way in Union Township. The abatement is for 60 percent for seven years on real estate taxes only. The company is moving from an existing Union Township location on Fulton Grove Road. The new facility is projected to add seven jobs to the current 16.

  • Sun Chemical Corp., Dispersions Division, for a $1.05 million expansion of a pigment blending facility on Bach-Buxton Road, Union Township. The abatement is for 60 percent for seven years on real estate and personal property taxes. The expansion will retain 97 jobs and add eight within three years.

  • Mobilized Systems, a custom trailer manufacturer, for $2 million for construction of a building on Seabrook Way, Union Township. The abatement is for 60 percent over seven years on real estate and personal property taxes with 25 new jobs expected in the next three years.
