Veggies help resist smokes

Friday, November 20, 1998

BY MARK CURNUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Celery and carrot sticks.

Keeping a plate of crunchy vegetables on his desk at work is how Dave Everson of Anderson Township survived the Great American Smokeout on Thursday.

He last smoked a cigarette Wednesday night at 9.

"I'm just staying busy. A lot of people have been calling to offer their support," said Mr. Everson, 38, whose attempt to quit was featured in Thursday's Cincinnati Enquirer.

"I haven't had any cravings, but I feel like my face has been in a constant blush since about 9 this morning (Thursday)."

This attempt to stop is his 10th since he started smoking 21 years ago as a student at Hillsboro High School. He has asked his wife, Cathy, and two children, David and Cassie, for their support.

Mr. Everson is a supervisor at Hasbro Inc., the toy manufacturer that has a Cincinnati division.

"So far, so good," Mr. Everson said when contacted at home at 9:30 p.m. Thursday. "There have been temptations, sure. I'm just trying to stay busy."
