OXFORD - Miami got some bad news three minutes into its 68-62 victory over Tennessee on Thursday night when Rob Mestas injured his left knee and left the game.
He did not return.
Three surgeries on Mestas' right knee forced him to miss all but four games and redshirt last season.
Mestas underwent a MRI Thursday night. The results will be in this morning.
If there's not a tear, Mestas will miss a week to 10 days. If there's a tear, it would be six to eight weeks.
Trainer Tom Reed does not think it's a season-ending injury. The injury happened when Mestas went coast-to-coast to score his only field goal of game.
Mestas is critical to Miami's success.
"We're definitely a better team with him," coach Charlie Coles said. "We can play faster, better defense."
Devin's back
Former Miami star Devin Davis attended Thursday's game. Davis is playing professionally in Spain.
"Just came down for a little break," he said.
Yes, Davis still has dreadlocks.
Thanks, UT
Coles thanked Tennessee for coming to Millett.
"Nowadays, a lot big schools won't do that," he said. "I really appreciate it. Their players didn't know where they were at. I asked one, 'Did they give you a map, son.' He said he thought he was in northern Ohio."
Talented family
Coles, wife of the Miami coach, performed the national anthem, as part of the Fontones, a trio of she sings with.
The group got a rousing ovation from the near-capacity crowd at Millett.
