Tuesday, November 24, 1998

Firefighters rescued four people Monday night from a Northside apartment building that was threatened by fire in an attached garage.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the three-story multidwelling at 4018 Apple St. about 7:20 p.m. and found a fire in the garage. No one was injured. Damage was estimated at $5,000.

The cause of the blaze was listed as suspect, as were several other fires set in the neighborhood Monday night, fire officials said.

4 sentenced in bank robbery

The key figures in a bungled bank robbery in the West End are on their way to prison.

Judge Robert Ruehlman of Hamilton County Common Pleas Court sentenced three men and a woman Monday on charges ranging from kidnapping to aggravated robbery.

All four pleaded guilty last month. Timothy Pope faces trial later this year.

Prosecutors say the group robbed the Fifth Third Bank at Harrison and Spring Grove avenues on Aug. 4.

Clifford Jones, 21, was given 39 years in prison for the robbery and another three years for an unrelated theft. Trenton Pope, 18, was sentenced to 31 years, and Eric Chaffer, 18, was sentenced to 19 years.

Sarah Schmidt, 21, received a 22-year sentence. Police say she was the would-be getaway driver, who fled with a baby in the car.

4 years in prison for court fracas

A College Hill man was sentenced to four years in prison Monday after pleading guilty to assaulting guards during a courtroom outburst Aug. 14.

Alphonso Bowers, 23, entered the plea before Judge Richard Niehaus of Hamilton County Common Pleas Court.

The charges stem from a brawl Mr. Bowers started in Judge Ann Marie Tracey's courtroom after he was convicted on crack cocaine charges.

2 hurt when bus hits station wagon

MIDDLETOWN - Two people were hurt when a city school bus, which was empty except for the driver, struck a station wagon Monday morning. Robert Webb, who was driving a Ford Escort station wagon, was flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. A report on his condition was not immediately available Monday night. His age and city of residence also were not available.

Mr. Webb, whose vehicle was forced into a utility pole, was trapped inside for an hour before he was freed.

The bus driver, Julia Hollon, 52, of Franklin, was treated at Middletown Regional Hospital and released.

The accident occurred just before 11 a.m. The bus struck Mr. Webb's vehicle, which had been southbound on Breiel Boulevard, as it turned left into the entrance of Lefferson Park, Middletown police said.

The crash remained under investigation Monday evening.

3rd man indicted in fatal shooting

A third suspect was indicted Monday on charges of killing a 20-year-old man in Over-the-Rhine.

David O. Lee faces charges of aggravated robbery and aggravated murder in connection with the Nov. 3 shooting death of Quincy Freeman.

Ishmell Foster, 22, and Nathan Carter, 24, also have been indicted on aggravated murder charges. Police have said the three men confronted Mr. Freeman just before midnight Nov. 3. They said Mr. Carter is the one who pulled the trigger.

Mr. Freeman, a Queen City Vocational student, was shot twice in the head. His mother said he was robbed of everything but a beeper and two nickels.

2 men indicted in death, alleged threat

A Cincinnati man was indicted Monday in the fatal shooting of Clint Gardner last week.

Lester Johnson, who faces one count of murder, is accused of using a .38-caliber handgun to kill Mr. Gardner, of Over-the-Rhine, on Nov. 15.

Another man, Damien Johnson, has been linked to the case and was indicted Monday on charges of felonious assault, tampering with evidence and intimidation of a witness.

Police say Damien Johnson assaulted Mr. Gardner the same day and, after the shooting, removed the gun from the scene.

Three days later, police say, Damien Johnson warned a witness to stay quiet or he would put her "6 feet under."

If convicted, Damien Johnson faces five to 20 years in prison. Lester Johnson faces 20 years to life.
