Wednesday, November 25, 1998

Former Williamstown Mayor Bob Jones has made headlines frequently in recent years:

  • November 1993: Mr. Jones, a hairdresser and owner of Genesis Styling Salon, is elected mayor of Williamstown.

  • October 1996: The mayor and Councilman Mark Risen get into a physical fight at City Hall. Both are convicted of disorderly conduct and ordered to pay fines.

  • March 1997: Kentucky State Police begin investigating Mr. Jones after he pays $1,400 in attorney fees with a city check.

  • April 1997: A Grant County jury indicts Mr. Jones on charges that he used city money for personal gain, forged a payroll document, lied to a grand jury, misused city funds and didn't pay personal utility bills.

  • July 1997: Impeachment hearings result in Mr. Jones being removed from office.

  • October 1997: Mr. Jones pleads guilty to 11 misdemeanor counts of official misconduct and one misdemeanor count of perjury. He is sentenced to two years' probation and ordered to repay the city $2,900, return any city property he has and stop distributing his self-published book, Where Pigeons Roost: A Commonwealth Conspiracy, which he wrote after being impeached.

  • May 1998: Mr. Jones loses the Democratic primary in the race to become Grant County judge-executive.

  • Nov. 3, 1998: Mr. Jones loses in his attempt to again win election as mayor.

  • Nov. 24, 1998: Mr. Jones is arrested at his Williamstown home to face charges that he robbed two banks in suburban Dayton, Ohio.
