NEWPORT - A man who police say tried to rob a bank just a block from the Newport police station Friday never made it out of the building.
Joseph Campbell, 41, of Newport, who was know to police, was lodged in the Campbell County Jail on a federal bank robbery charge after Newport police stopped him at the door.
Police said a man entered the Star Bank at 810 Monmouth St. just before 2 p.m., handed employees a note that said he had a weapon, and demanded money, said Sgt. Coy Cox, Newport Police spokesman. Police learned of the robbery in a phone call and were on the scene in "less than one minute," preventing the suspect from leaving the bank, Sgt. Cox said.
No weapons were found and no one was hurt, Sgt. Cox said.
