Newborn found in company restroom
Mother is facing criminal charges

FRANKLIN — A Middletown woman was expected to be charged with attempted murder after she gave birth to a baby girl at her workplace Monday afternoon, then allegedly put the newborn in a garbage can and left, Franklin police said.

The baby, who might have been in the trash can as long as two hours, was being treated late Monday at Children's Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.

The mother, Deborah Mackey, 38, of Aspen Drive, Middletown, was taken to Middletown Regional Hospital and was expected to to be released to police custody late Monday or early this morning, Franklin police Capt. Gerry Massey said.

“We'll charge her with attempted murder,” he said.

The baby likely would be dead were it not for the decisive actions of a maintenance worker who discovered the child while cleaning the women's room at Ample Industries on Commerce Center Drive, where Mrs. Mackey works. By then, Ms. Mackey had left Ample without notifying her co-workers or supervisor and was apprehended at her Middletown residence.

No one else is expected to be charged, Capt. Massey said.
