WASHINGTON — Rep. Steve Chabot was picked Saturday to be one of 13 managers of the presidential impeachment case when it reaches the Senate floor.

Mr. Chabot, R-Cincinnati, was picked by Rep. Henry Hyde, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Mr. Chabot is a member of the panel.

“I think there is a very good chance it will go to trial,” said Mr. Chabot, referring to speculation that a deal might yet be worked out to stave off a trial.

Mr. Chabot and Mr. Hyde and the other managers formally took the articles of impeachment to the clerk of the Senate on Saturday afternoon, walking together through the center of the Capitol from the House side to the Senate side.

When asked about his thoughts during that walk, Mr. Chabot said, “They were similar to my thoughts all day. It is a very sad day, certainly one that does not give me any pleasure.”

As a manager of the case, Mr. Chabot will be helping to present the evidence, a role that means he will speak before the senators at times.

When asked about how the impeachment case will fare in the Senate, he said, “I just hope that the Senate looks at the case with great care and decides what's in the best interests of the country.”
