Impeachment decision logo Latest updates from Associated Press

  • Senate trial: In mid-January, House Republicans will argue their two impeachment charges against President Clnton before senators sitting as jurors. Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist will preside.

  • The vote: A two-thirds Senate majority is needed to convict and remove the president from office.

  • Witnesses: Whether the entire Senate or a panel will hear witnesses is undecided.

  • Duration: Estimates of trial length vary from three days to weeks or months. The Senate could also drop the charges at any time and pursue other options, such as censure.

  • What if? If the president is ousted, Vice President Gore would be sworn in as president and would select a vice president (subject to congressional approval).
