Dewine confident of impartial trial

WASHINGTON — Sen. Mike DeWine said Saturday he is confident the Senate will deal with President Clinton's case in a “fair and impartial” way.

“It is now our historic responsibility to take this matter up,” he said after watching the House impeachment of President Clinton from his Annandale, Va., home.

“This is a very strong country, this is a very serious matter and this is a very historic day, but I have faith in the Constitution and I have faith in the American people and we will proceed according to the Constitution,” he said.

Mr. DeWine, R-Ohio, said he did not see a trial derailing regular legislative action, especially if it is held in January or February.

During those months, he said, few major bills make it to the floor. Most of the work is in morning committee sessions.

Those could still be held, he said, with the trial taking up four or five hours a day during the afternoon. Or, Senate business could be conducted at night.

“This is a strong country and we will get through this,” he said.
