Employees charged after fights inside bar

BY JANE PRENDERGAST
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — A bar long familiar to Covington police was temporarily closed early Wednesday after officers responded for a fight and another started while they were there.

Police were dispatched to Kelly's Stable on Madison Avenue about 12:15 a.m. after somebody called to report a fight inside the bar. But when officers arrived, the doors were locked and employees would not open them, police reports said. A patron sitting at the bar did, however.

The officers went inside, their reports said, but the barmaid and doorman assured them the trouble was over. They left, but didn't get far.

The fighting started again. The officers went back in and found that the same doorman, Allen Buckamneer, was one of the fighters, the report said. He and bar manager Nathan Abrams had been fighting both times, police said.

Mr. Abrams, 30, of Covington, was arrested and charged with alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct. Police said he was beating on the bar with a stick.

The barmaid, Lena Burchfield, 26, of Butler, was cited for operating a disorderly premise. She was ordered to appear in court Jan. 14. She also had been drinking, the reports said.

The charge is a misdemeanor under the state's alcoholic beverage control laws. The bar was closed after the fights, but was allowed to reopen later.

Kelly's has been the subject of disputes with the city before. In 1985, the city commission revoked the bar's license after several fights.
