Wyoming's new Web site to be gateway to city hall

BY MARIE McCAIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

WYOMING — On the threshold of the 21st century, Wyoming is preparing to step into cyberspace.

Producers of the city's new Web site predict it will facilitate communication between residents and city officials.

The first phase of the project will be running by Feb. 1. A second phase should be completed later in the year.

“This will be a resource for residents and prospective residents,” said Todd Levy of Wyoming, co-chair of the city's Web site committee.

“It will also be a tool to improve the functionality of this city's government. Hopefully it will help to streamline procedures by offering basic information and forms.”

Mr. Levy works for a Cincinnati-based Internet development company, Global Cloud Ltd., that will host the site for free. The company also has volunteered to design the Web location.

If Global were charging the city, the cost for service would exceed $20,000, Mr. Levy said.

While offering history and other background information on Wyoming, the site also will allow residents to download tax and permit forms.

It will contain in-depth information about city departments and will have links to other Wyoming sites, such as churches and synagogues, the school district and the merchants' association. E-mail will be set up to city departments; electronic mail links to council members and other city staff will be added later.

Providing free development programming will be Computer Sciences Corp. (CSC), based in California.

Ken Ohnemus, a CSC employee, has lived in Wyoming for about a year. He thought donating his employer's assistance on this project would be a good way to promote his new hometown.

He said his company's services — if it were charging the city — would be about $15,000.

Anita Guy, a resident who owns a technical writing agency, has volunteered to “Web-size” copy for the site.

“There are a number of sources to be compiled,” Ms. Guy said, adding that her job is to condense long, drawn-out text into easily read, informative Web site subjects.

“This is going to be a great asset to our community,” she said of the site.

“It's a good way to sell Wyoming to potential residents. This community has a great reputation because of its atmosphere and schools. This is just another way of reaching out.”
