Avondale native, 76, was devoted to Hebrew University

Werner O. Schmalfuss died Monday of lung cancer at Christ Hospital. The Bridgetown resident was 75. Born in Germany, Mr. Schmalfuss moved to Clifton at age 5. He attended Hughes High School and the University of Cincinnati, and obtained a master's degree in education from Xavier University. He served as an Army

paratrooper during World War II. -->He was a physical education teacher for the Cincinnati public schools and was athletic director at the former Courter High School. He retired in 1978 after 30 years of service.

He was a member of St. Peter and St. Paul United Church of Christ. He also was a member of the UC Boosters.

Survivors include: his wife of 44 years, Judith A. Schmalfuss; a daughter, Ann C. Hinkle of Oxford; a son, Jay O. Schmalfuss of Mount Washington; and a granddaughter.

Service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter and St. Paul United Church of Christ, Westwood. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Spring Grove Cemetery.

Donations may be made to St. Peter and St. Paul United Church of Christ, 3001 Queen City Ave., Cincinnati 45238.
