Policeman quits after search finds child porn on computer
Sergeant viewed smut at work, report says

Saturday, December 26, 1998

BY The Associated Press

AKRON, Ohio -- A police sergeant suspected of looking at pornography at work and storing pictures on his home computer has retired.

The computer had hundreds of pornographic pictures, including at least 30 of young girls, according to a report released Thursday by Law Director Max Rothal.

Dennis Sheehy, 48, retired Dec. 14, four days after investigators seized the computer. Mr. Sheehy, who wasn't charged, said he wanted to avoid embarrassing his wife and six children. His retirement prevents department discipline.

Mr. Sheehy said he received the pictures by copying friends' computer disks. He said he had not had time to look at all the material and would not have known about the child pornography.

It is illegal to have images of nude minors, but Mr. Sheehy was given immunity from prosecution in exchange for his cooperation. Mr. Sheehy also admitted that he looked at pornography while on duty for entertainment, investigators said.

Mr. Sheehy was investigated twice for sexual harassment and reprimanded more than a dozen times during his 27-year career for violating policies and regulations, police records show.
