Friends plan march on city hall in support of wheelchair desperado

Saturday, December 26, 1998

BY The Associated Press

SANDUSKY, Ohio -- About 50 people are planning to march to City Hall on Tuesday to support Kelly Dillery. The city prosecutor has charged her with driving her motorized wheelchair in the street, with her 4-year-old daughter on her lap.

"I'm glad because it will show police I'm not the only one out there who's in the wheelchair," said Ms. Dillery, who has muscular dystrophy. "I'm doing what I have to do."

Ms. Dillery, 30, was charged last month with child endangering after a motorist said her daughter Kelsi's head hit his side-view mirror as the two passed by.

The Sandusky woman was cited again this month with a misdemeanor of walking along highways, which prohibits people and unauthorized vehicles from traveling on those roads.

Police and the city prosecutor said they have received many complaints about Ms. Dillery. She has pleaded not guilty to both charges. No trial dates have been set.

The march was organized by Mary Butler, an advocacy and outreach coordinator for an independent living center in Elyria, and Shona Eakin, a disability rights activist with the Ability Center of Greater Toledo.
