Another chapter in their lives
MOTHER-DAUGHTER CLOSER
Susan Anthony and her birth daughter, Kristin Delfeld, continue making up for lost time.
The two found each other in January 1997 through BirthQuest, an Internet adoption registry. Mrs. Anthony, an unwed college student at the time, gave birth to Ms. Delfeld on July 4, 1967, in Milwaukee. She reluctantly gave the baby up for adoption.
Mrs. Anthony later married Larry Anthony and had two other children, Paul and Maria. A Milwaukee couple adopted Ms. Delfeld.
The 52-year-old Madeira woman and her 31-year-old birth daughter from Milwaukee, whose story appeared in the Enquirer May 8, continue to visit, talk on the phone and correspond via e-mail. Ms. Delfeld joined the Anthony family for a scuba diving vacation in July at Key West, Fla. The relationship, Mrs. Anthony said, is growing.
We're developing a deeper respect for one another. I went through a little period where I tried too hard to treat her exactly like I treat Paul and Maria, she said.
Mrs. Anthony still hasn't met or talked with Ms. Delfeld's parents, who have chosen so far not to have contact with their daughter's birth mother.
