Christmas Day assault charged in officer case

BY STEVE KEMME
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — A new twist has developed in a domestic dispute that has caused the Butler County Sheriff's Department to investigate one of its county jail corrections officers.

Earlier this week, a judge issued a temporary protection order against Officer Sherry Catron and her mother, Clela Compton, both of Middletown.

Cynthia Crain, the girlfriend of Officer Catron's ex-husband, accused her and Mrs. Compton of stalking her and her mother, Sue Crain, at their Middletown home. She also accused Officer Catron of getting a jail inmate to call her and threaten her.

But Wednesday, Mrs. Compton obtained a temporary protection order from Butler County Domestic Relations Judge Leslie Spillane against Jerry Catron of Middletown, Officer Catron's ex-husband.

In her petition for a protection order, Mrs. Compton said Mr. Catron assaulted her twice on Christmas.

“I was forced to the ground and threatened,” she said. “He also grabbed me by the arm, jerking me away from a car.”

Mr. Catron denied the allegations and said the incident stemmed from a dispute with her family over whether he had visitation rights on Christmas. “It's retaliation,” he said of the allegations.

He said his ex-wife's family assaulted him on Christmas. He said he filed an assault report with police against them and they filed an assault police report against him.

The protection order requires Mr. Catron to pick up his two children for visitations from the Middletown Police Station, to stay away from and avoid contact with Mrs. Compton, and to turn in all his weapons to police. Mr. Catron is an avid hunter, according to the petition.

A hearing on a permanent protection order will be Jan. 12.
