MIAMI NOTEBOOK
Coles thanks Donewald
BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
OXFORD Charlie Coles said one of the people who helped him through his ordeal after his cardiac arrest during the Miami-Western Michigan last Feb. 28 was WMU coach Bob Donewald.
Saturday, Miami honored Donewald with a plaque before the game. Coles presented it and hugged Donewald as the crowd at Millett Hall stood and cheered.
It was very kind of them, Donewald said. The most important thing is Charlie survived and is with us today.
Coles collapsed early in that game. After a three-hour delay, during which Coles was taken to the hospital and stabilized, the game resumed and Miami won.
After all that, he visited me in hospital every day, Coles said. He's a great human being, not a good one, a great one.
Coles and Donewald have been friends since Donewald was an assistant at Indiana.
SCHEDULE SHUFFLE: The Eastern Michigan game, originally scheduled for Wednesday, has been moved to Tuesday for television. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Ohio.
CROWD KILLER: Miami was expecting a crowd of 5,000 Saturday, but the winter storm kept most of the fans home. The game drew only 1,417, Miami's smallest home crowd of the year by nearly 3,000.
