Alzheimer's disease symptoms
In general, Alzheimer's disease is marked by a gradual loss of memory, intellectual and daily living skills, such as eating, dressing and caring for one's self.
But symptoms vary greatly among individuals, and symptoms change as the disease progresses and worsens. Common signs of Alzheimer's include:
Inability to perform routine tasks or to learn new ones.
Disorientation about where people are, what time it is, what day of the week or month is it; problems with abstract thinking.
Tendency to get lost in familiar surroundings, wandering, forgetting directions to everyday destinations.
Tendency to forget the names of familiar faces, including family members.
Inability to handle a checkbook, make change, read or write.
Changes in personality.
Lowered resistance to infections and other illnesses.
If symptoms persist, it's important to have a loved one screened by a geriatric specialist to find the cause of the problems.
More than 4 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease. It is more common after age 65, and about 20 percent of people 85 and older may be affected by it.
Alzheimer's is the the fourth-leading cause of death in older adults (after heart disease, cancer and stroke).
