Driver charged in Good Samaritan's death

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CROSBY TOWNSHIP — A Butler County man surrendered to Hamilton County sheriff's deputies Tuesday on charges stemming from a fatal auto wreck here New Year's Day.

Mark K. Putnick, 43, of Ross Township has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in the death of Timothy Trader, 21, of Eaton, Ohio, said Col. Ray Hoffbauer, commander of the sheriff's road patrol and detectives division. He also was charged with aggravated vehicular assault for injuries to Robert Bulach, 20, also of Eaton.

Mr. Bulach was treated at Mercy Hospital Hamilton for his injuries and released following the wreck on Ohio 128 north of Willey Road near the Butler County line.

Col. Hoffbauer said Mr. Putnick had been drinking before the 3:10 a.m. accident; DUI is one of the charges he faces.

Mr. Trader and Mr. Bulach had left their car to offer aid to motorists involved in a separate wreck. They had pulled their car around the accident scene. While Mr. Trader and Mr. Bulach were out of their car, Mr. Putnick drove his Dodge van into the back of a Chevrolet Blazer that was involved in the first crash. The impact caused the Blazer to spin, striking Mr. Trader and Mr. Bulach, sheriff's investigators said.

The original accident involved a southbound Dodge Avenger being driven by Roy H. Gass, 39, of Harrison that went left of the center line, striking the northbound Blazer head-on. It was being driven by Brian D. Croswell, 17, of Hamilton.

Mr. Gass remained in serious condition Tuesday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton. Mr. Croswell, and a passenger in the Blazer, Kathryn Zix, 17, of Hamilton, were treated at Mercy Hospital Hamilton and released.
