Kenton sheriff's office gets raises

BY SUSAN VELA
The Cincinnati Enquirer

COVINGTON — New Kenton County Sheriff Chuck Korzenborn might never have it so good again.

With no discussion, Kenton Fiscal Court members, all new themselves, approved Sheriff Korzenborn's 1999 spending plan of $1.8 million, which will allow for raises of about 4 percent throughout the sheriff's department.

“You're going to get your money's worth,” the new sheriff promised to Judge-executive Dick Murgatroyd and commissioners Dan Humpert, Barbara Black and Adam Koenig, who were sworn in Monday.

The $1.8 million budget was the fifth spending plan that Sheriff Korzenborn submitted, and it was about $2 million less than he originally proposed.

The spending plan no longer accounts for Sheriff Korzenborn's hopes to implement a third shift, which would have cost about $500,000.

He pared the budget further when he realized that a $1.5 million rainy-day fund accrued under Sheriff Gary Lay would not be available to the new administration.

Sheriff Korzenborn can ask fiscal court members for more money if the need arises.

He expects the sheriff's department to generate about $2.3 million in fees this year. Most of that money will be used to finance the department's budget.

About $1.6 million will be required for salaries, retirement and insurance; $150,060 for office expenses; and $67,473 for equipment.

The department's road division employs 13 law enforcers, the court division 14. Nine employees handle administrative work.
