UC union leaders want diverse board of trustees

BY DANA DiFILIPPO
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Union leaders representing 800 office workers at the University of Cincinnati have written to Gov.-elect Bob Taft, urging him to create a more diverse board of trustees to oversee the school.

The appointed nine-member board has one woman and no African American.

Members of the Service Employees International Union-District 925 have been working without a contract since August. They're seeking a contract provision that would ensure steady pay raises; they say administrators' reluctance to accommodate that request is rooted in racism and sexism. Most office workers are minorities and women.

Union leaders also urged Mr. Taft to make the board “experientially diverse.” Former Gov. George Voinovich's appointees have been Republicans from the corporate world, the union said. Mr. Taft also should “use his moral authority as Governor to urge UC to work to eradicate its discriminatory wage system.”

A Taft spokesman said the governor-elect is busy appointing senior Cabinet members and preparing for his transition and probably won't consider applicants for the open UC trustee seat for at least several weeks.

Trustees serve staggered nine-year terms. Each year, a trustee seat opens. The trustee term of George Strike, chief executive officer of American Laundry Corp., recently expired.
