Askey stops record 58 shots
Enquirer news services
PHILADELPHIA Tom Askey turned aside a career-high and franchise-record 58 shots as the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks battled the defending Calder Cup champion Philadelphia Phantoms to a 2-2 tie Wednesday night.
Francis Belanger picked up a loose puck in the crease and slipped the puck past Askey for his fifth goal of the season with 5:22 left in the third period to tie the game for Philadelphia after Marc Chouinard had given Cincinnati a 2-1 lead with a late second period goal.
The Ducks were outshot 60-22 in the game including 25-7 in the second period. The Phantoms' 60 shots were the most ever in a game against Cincinnati, breaking the previous high of 54 set by the Worcester IceCats on March 11, 1998.
The Ducks played the final two periods without all-star center and leading scorer Bob Wren, who was given a match penalty by referee Greg Kimmerly at 19:15 of the first period after Wren high-sticked the Phantoms' Richard Park.
