Inmate gives jailer $200 thank-you
BY TERRY FLYNN
The Cincinnati Enquirer
NEWPORT Campbell County Jailer Greg Buckler never expected to receive payment from a former inmate, so he was more than a little surprised when he received a $200 check from one.
A retired German businessman who spent three days in the Campbell County jail last year awaiting trial in federal court in Cincinnati was so impressed with his treatment, he wrote a glowing letter to Mr. Buckler, accompanied by the check.
Jost-Burkhard Anderhub, 59, of Schlangenbad, Germany, who is a firearms collector, was charged with sending gun parts through the mail. He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court and was sentenced to the three days he had already served.
Mr. Anderhub, who is retired from a sales job with a U.S. company, said he had never been in jail before and his only impression of U.S. jails was from stories and movies.
Looking back, I think I can be regarded as "lucky' ... having been imprisoned at (the) Campbell Co. Detention Centre, he wrote in his letter to Mr. Buckler.
He praised his treatment by detention officers as absolutely flawless and very friendly, although very strict.
Mr. Anderhub said he didn't mean to imply that he liked his stay in jail, but said the experience probably could have been much worse except for the professionalism of the detention officers.
Although Mr. Anderhub was released from the jail in early October and sent the letter and check Oct. 26, Mr. Buckler said he waited to reveal the gift until the check had cleared.
This isn't something you ever expect, he said Thursday. The gentleman said he thought we might use the money for a staff party, but I didn't think that would be ethical, so the money was placed in our general fund budget.
