More vehicles sent to battle latest onslaught

        Cincinnati residents can expect their streets to be cleared faster today than a week ago.

        The city has nearly doubled the number of snow-clearing trucks on the streets since the first of three winter storms hit the city. And, city leaders lament, they should have put more trucks on the streets in the first place.

        City Manager John Shirey said Friday that city officials blew it when they failed to use all available trucks to remove snow and ice on city streets for the storm that arrived overnight on New Year's Day.

        “We just missed it because we didn't know how fast that stuff was going to freeze and create havoc on side roads,” Mr. Shirey said.

        On New Year's Day, the city used 52 dump trucks from the Department of Public Works Highway Maintenance Division to plow and salt city streets.

        Vehicles from other city agen cies were deployed this week. Helping to clear the city's primary and secondary roads by 7 p.m. Thursday were 46 vehicles from the city's sewer district, water works, parks, Recreation Department, Sanitation Division and Fleet Services.

        By Friday morning, Mr. Shirey said, all trucks were being used to clear residential roads.
