Mayor resigns in Glendale

Village had just replaced a councilman

BY MARIE McCAIN
The Cincinnati Enquirer

GLENDALE — With the new year just two weeks old, the 1999 buzzword in the village is “change.”

During council's monthly meeting this week, Mayor Alec Brockmeier surprised everyone by resigning 10 months before the end of his second four-year term.

“Eventually we all reach the point of burnout,” Mr. Brockmeier said Wednesday.

Mr. Brockmeier, 45, was first elected to council about 10 years ago. He was elected mayor in 1992.

“He was here every day. He oversaw the police and fire departments ... plus he was on the planning commission. It can be a very taxing and very demanding job,” Village Administrator Walter Cordes said.

Council had just reorganized and appointed a replacement to fill the vacancy left by the December resignation of longtime Councilman Herbert Wengler.

Both Mr. Wengler and Mr. Brockmeier said they left government to allow others a chance at running the village.

“I had no plans to run again and I felt like I was kind of coasting. I ... decided the best thing for Glendale, for council ... and for me was to resign,” Mr. Brockmeier said.

Said Mr. Wengler: “I stayed a little longer than I intended to. I just felt it was time for me to make an opening for someone else.”

He was appointed to his seat in 1996 after the death of Councilman Grant Haffner.

Former Vice Mayor Thomas Todd has been appointed mayor, while former Clerk/Treasurer Ephriam Swafford has been appointed to take the seat vacated by Mr. Wengler.

Joseph Hubbard has been appointed clerk/treasurer; Councilwoman Nancy Floyd was named vice mayor.

Council still has one position open.
