MIAMI NOTEBOOK
'Technicality' benches Taylor
BY JOHN FAY
The Cincinnati Enquirer
OXFORD Anthony Taylor was healthy enough to play Saturday for the first time in five games, but Taylor did not dress due to an institutional policy that has brought to athletic department's attention.
It was a technicality, Miami coach Charlie Coles said. I don't even know what it was. The university informed us of it. He didn't break any laws. It's not academics.
Taylor will be available to play Wednesday when Miami goes to Kent for a 7 p.m. game.
Taylor, last year's third-leading scorer, has missed five games with sore arches in both his feet.
Movin' on up
Wally Szczerbiak moved up three places from ninth to sixth on Miami's all-time scoring list by hitting 25 points Saturday.
Szczerbiak, who has 1,424 points, is behind only Ron Harper (2,377), Devin Davis (1,828), Eric Newsome (1,679), Landon Hackim (1,493) and Archie Aldridge.
Damon Frierson started the day 10 points and two places ahead of Szczerbiak and ended it one point and one place behind him.
Passing fancy
The statistics say Miami is an unselfish team. Rob Mestas leads the team with 4.1 assists. Frierson and Szczerbiak are close behind at 3.8 per game.
They really pass the ball well, Akron coach Dan Hipsher said. They know where people are and they get it to them.
Welcome back
Nate Schindewolf, who spent his freshman year at Miami before transferring to Akron, started for the Zips.
Schinldewolf, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, had seven points on 2-for-9 shooting.
Rockets rescheduled
The Miami-Toledo game, which was postponed Wednesday when the Rockets couldn't get to Millett Hall, has been officially rescheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1.
Up next
Miami goes on the road to play Kent, which is one of surprises of the MAC. The Golden Flashes went in Saturday's game at Marshall 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the league.
