NEW HAVEN 4, MIGHTY DUCKS 3

Ex-Cyclone MacDonald thwarts Ducks

BY DAVE HELLER
Enquirer contributor

The Cincinnati Mighty Ducks outshot New Haven 41-26, but lost 4-3 to the Beast in front of the largest crowd at Cincinnati Gardens this season (5,840). Former Cyclones goalie Todd MacDonald stopped 38 shots.

“I always get a little more pumped up when I get a chance to play in Cincinnati,” said MacDonald, who stopped 36 shots in a 2-1 New Haven win over the Ducks last season here. “I've always liked this building, and have had decent success here.”

The Ducks dominated the first period, recording 21 shots on goal, their most shots in any period this season and the most ever allowed by New Haven in one period. Cincinnati had 10 scoring chances among those shots, but went into the locker room with just one goal.

“We hit more eyes on that dragon head (the chest of MacDonald's uniform) than corners,” Ducks coach Moe Mantha said. “Our forwards have to bear down when they shoot. You can't shoot just to shoot, you have to shoot to score. We should have put them away in the first period.”
