Man critical after shooting

Monday, January 18, 1999

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Two men got into a fight over a woman in a Mount Washington apartment, leaving one hospitalized and the other jailed.

Ernest Gross Jr., 54, of the 2500 block of Beechmont Avenue was in the Hamilton County Justice Center without bond, charged with felonious assault.

. Cincinnati police say Mr. Gross shot Henry Abrams, 46, with a .38-caliber revolver late Saturday after Mr. Abrams forced his way into the apartment of Lucille Bayless in the 2000 block of Beechmont Avenue. Mr. Abrams, a resident of the 2300 block of Salvador Street in Mount Washington, underwent surgery at University Hospital. He was in critical condition Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said. Police charged him with aggravated burglary.

Sgt. Tom Lanter said Mr. Abrams dated Ms. Bayless until about a week ago. Saturday night, Mr. Abrams called her, discovered Mr. Gross was there and said he was coming over.

When he arrived, he allegedly kicked the door in, and Mr. Gross allegedly shot him once in the lower torso.

The two men apparently knew each other and had an ongoing feud, Sgt. Lanter said.

"This case is a little different than if you were in your home, sleeping and an unknown individual came in and tried to cause you or your family harm," Sgt. Lanter said. "Anybody in their right mind would protect their family and themselves in that situation. Because of the statements that were made and the history between (the two men), this case was different."

Police ask anyone with further information to call 352-3542 or Crimestoppers at 352-3040. Callers may remain anonymous.

In another shooting -- at 2:52 a.m. Sunday in Delhi Township -- a Mason man was charged with two counts of negligent assault after two men were injured at a party when a firearm was fired into a cement floor. The charge is a third-degree misdemeanor.

Jedd Williams, 21, of the 9100 block of Saddlewood Place was arrested less than an hour later in the 700 block of Ivy Hills Drive in Delhi.

Injured were Scott Brinkman and Joseph Webb. Their conditions were unavailable Sunday.
