Police think suspect may be serial rapist

BY TANYA BRICKING
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Cincinnati police are looking for a man they say may be a serial rapist.

He is suspected in the rapes or assaults of at least four victims ranging in age from 13 to 19 in the neighborhoods of Winton Hills, Avondale and Madisonville.

Arthur Crumpley Jr., 28, of Springfield Township has been indicted on three counts each of rape, gross sexual imposition and attempted rape. If convicted, he could face more than 50 years in prison.

Police allege Mr. Crumpley com mitted sexual offenses even after he knew detectives were investigating him on sex-related charges.

“This guy, he's getting around all over the place,” said Sgt. David Wuest, a supervisor in the police division's personal crimes unit. “He's got a smooth-talking line. He gets the girls to go somewhere.”

Then he quickly switches from flirtation to violence, he said.

“It's just a matter of time before he hurts someone. He's already done enough damage as it is.”

Police began investigating after a 16-year-old girl in Winton Hills reported he touched her inappropriately in September.

Two months later, a 19-year-old woman invited him into her Avondale apartment. Police say he overpowered her and sexually assaulted her.

In a third case, in December, police say he approached two girls, 13 and 14, who were on their way to school in Madisonville. He told them he could help them get jobs and lured them to come with him, police say, then fondled both girls.

Mr. Crumpley uses several aliases and may go by the nickname “Pete,” police say. His convictions include drug trafficking and drug abuse.

Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 352-3040. Callers to the hot line remain anonymous and can earn up to $1,000 for tips that lead to an arrest.
