Aquarium signs get attention

BY RAY SCHAEFER
Enquirer Contributor

NEWPORT — With the city's aquarium set to open in May, officials here are figuring out ways to point visitors to it.

Wally Pagan, executive director of Southbank Partners of Newport, told city commissioners on Monday he is closing in on a plan to put signs at several spots along interstate highways. They'll be designed to attract visitors to the aquarium, as well as the convention center that opened in Covington in November.

Mr. Pagan said discussions with the Kentucky Department of Transportation have been going on for several months over how the signs must look, and he said a decision should be made by Feb. 15.

“There is a manual thicker than you can imagine of rules,” Mr. Pagan said. “We're requesting 12 highway signs; we're looking at eight being approved. We're elated.”

Mr. Pagan said possible locations include:

        • Northbound Interstate 75 near the I-275 interchange.

        • Northbound I-75 near the Kyles Lane exit.

        • Eastbound I-275 near the I-75 interchange.

        • Westbound I-275 near the I-471 interchange.

        • Northbound AA Highway near I-275.

Mr. Pagan and commissioners also talked about the need for road and bridge improvements near the aquarium. Mr. Pagan said Southbank is starting to check out the possibility of a new bridge over the Licking River that would connect Newport and Covington.

Commissioner Beth Fennell said she is concerned about the fate of parking along Park Avenue near the I-471/Ky. 8 exit, which ends next to the city's restaurants along the river.

“I would prefer not to make any radical changes to that ramp until we see how the traffic is going to flow to our riverfront,” Ms. Fennell said.

Mr. Pagan said four stops being considered for the proposed river shuttle that would connect Covington, Newport and Cincinnati include the areas near the Covington Landing and Mike Fink restaurants and the Barleycorn's and Chart House restaurants in Newport. He said the Cincinnati stops have not been determined.
