Inclusion of disabled lauded

Professor-doctor's national advocacy wins top award

BY PERRY BROTHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

After a rugby accident stripped his ability to walk two weeks before he graduated from medical school, Dr. Hugh Hawkins became an advocate for people with disabilities nationwide.

Dr. Hawkins, director of radiology at Drake Center, was honored for his work with the disabled, receiving the Award of Distinction from Cincinnati's Inclusion Network. The award was one of five presented Monday night during the fourth annual Inclusion Leadership Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency downtown.

“I hope that what I do is what other people also do,” he said. Dr. Hawkins, who has mentored and counseled people with disabilities, is also a professor of radiology and director of breast imaging at University Hospital.

A sold-out audience of about 800 packed the Regency ballroom for the ceremony. In its fourth year, the network has moved closer to fulfilling its vision of “a community that embraces the contributions and participation of all people with disabilities in every aspect of life,” said Neal Mayerson, president of the Manuel D. and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation, which created the network.

“There's a lot to do, but we have made a lot of progress,” he said, citing the sold-out crowd as an example of that progress.

The size of the gathering inspired the Rev. Kathy N. Reeves, the keynote speaker, who serves as the executive secretary of Congregational Health Ministries in the Health and Relief Unit at the General Board of Global Ministries in New York.

“Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for inclusion and many people joined his dream. The network that you have developed sparks that dream.”

Other winners:
        • Jeff Kennedy, Inclusion in the Community, for including children with disabilities on his children's soccer teams.

        • Montgomery Square Kroger store, Inclusion in the Workplace, for employing people with disabilities.

        • Purcell Marian High School, Inclusion in Education, for promoting inclusiveness in all areas at the school.

        • St. Anthony's Church, Inclusion in Religion, for inclusion practices that transcend the physical needs of the disabled members of its congregation.
