City job could stay in family

Law director's wife will seek post he leaves

BY WALT SCHAEFER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NORWOOD — Norwood Law Director Timothy A. Garry Jr. has announced he will not seek re-election in November — but he hopes the job stays in the family.

Mr. Garry's wife, Vickie, 39, former assistant dean at the Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky Universi ty, announced her candidacy for the office Tuesday.

However, Mrs. Garry could face competition in a May primary. Other lawyers in the community have expressed interest in the position and the Republican Party endorsement has not been decided, Mayor Joe Hochbein said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Hochbein was endorsed by the party Monday night as he seeks his second four-year term.

As for the law director's post, the Republican Party central committee “will convene on Monday to discuss the endorsement,” the mayor said. “They have appointed a nomi nating committee, which will in the next week accept applications from anyone interested in serving as law director.”

The process in no way means Mrs. Garry will not receive endorsement, “but I have had other people express interest. I am not at liberty to give out those names,” the mayor said.

He said the party should review all applicants before an endorsement. The job will pay $26,500.

“I am going to run with or without the party endorsement,” Mrs. Garry said. “But I am a Republican and would like the support of my party. I have seen the job Tim has done, and I think he has done a wonderful job for the city of Norwood.

“We are committed to this city. It is our home and we want to continue ... the progress that has been made by this administration. Tim has decided that it is in the best interests of our family that he focus on his law practice.”

The Garrys are partners in the law firm of Garry & Garry in downtown Cincinnati.

Mrs. Garry, who holds a bachelor's from Miami University in political science and a degree from Chase College of Law, was an assistant Hamilton County prosecutor for six years before becoming a dean of the college for more than three years.

She joined her husband in private practice two years ago. The Garrys have three children.

Mr. Hochbein said Republicans endorsed other incumbents Monday night, including Donnie Jones for auditor and city council-at-large members Rita Smith, Helen Geraci and Cliff Miller.

Mr. Miller, who was elected to the 5th Ward council seat in 1997, was appointed to fill the at-large seat vacated by Michael Bain, who resigned and moved from the city last year.

Tina Adams, who was appointed to the 5th Ward seat held by Mr. Miller, was endorsed, as were incumbents Coy Fugett in the 1st Ward, Ruth Cain in the 3rd Ward, 4th Ward Councilman Charles Marshall and Sandy McManus in the 6th Ward. George A. Schaefer was endorsed as 2nd Ward candidate seeking the seat held by Michael Fulmer, a Democrat.
