Covington, Kenton Co. to share repair of road

BY CINDY SCHROEDER
The Cincinnati Enquirer

INDEPENDENCE — Covington and Kenton County officials will split the costs of stabilizing a section of Montague Road that was closed last week because of slippage.

While Montague is still a county road, Kenton County officials removed it from the list of roads that it maintains about a year ago.

The heavily-traveled road links Ludlow and Covington.

On Tuesday, Kenton Fiscal Court agreed to temporarily take responsibility for the maintenance so that the necessary repairs could be made.

As part of the agreement, Covington will pay $85,000 toward the repairs, and Kenton County will cover $50,000.

The county also will help reduce the costs through the use of its workers and equipment.

Once the repairs are made, Covington will take over maintenance.

Covington City Manager Greg Jarvis told the fiscal court that he expects Covington City Commission to approve the agreement at its meeting Tuesday.

Last week, the county closed a 400-foot section of Montague Road less than a half-mile east of its intersection with Devou Park Road.

“I decided it was too dangerous for vehicular traffic, especially with all the snow and ice,” said Chris Warneford, superintendent of public works.

While a temporary fix will be made in about a week, Mr. Warneford said, permanent repairs should begin in late April or early May, weather permitting.

In other business, the fiscal court:

        • Approved hiring Don Richardson as special counsel for the Kenton County Jail. Jailer Terry Carl had proposed hiring his own attorney for the 262-bed jail in a plan submitted to the new fiscal court last month.

The arrangement also will ease the burden on Kenton County Attorney Garry Edmondson, who said he no longer can handle all of the county's legal work.

        • Recognized Carol Brockell, who is retiring as administrative office manager and fiscal court clerk after nearly 30 years with the county.

        • Agreed to let guests of the Northern Kentucky Convention Center use Kenton County's new parking garage during the convention center's grand opening weekend, Feb. 20 and 21.
