UC profs' 3-year deal approved

Trustees also OK contract for Steger

BY EARNEST WINSTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Tuesday's contract signing between the University of Cincinnati and the union representing 1,900 professors was marked with applause and words of goodwill.

It was in stark contrast to several months of heated contract negotiations between UC and its professors. Union members authorized a strike in November, but instead continued to negotiate.

Professors approved the three-year contract with pay raises earlier this month. “Thank you very much for approving the contract,” James Cebula, president of UC's chapter of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), told the trustees. Professors had worked without a contract since Aug. 31.

The three-year contract gives faculty a $1,200 raise across the board the first year. A 3.5 percent raise follows in years two and three.

“We are happy at the spirit of cooperation that has emerged between the adminis tration and AAUP in arriving at an agreement which resolves all issues for three years,” said Benjamin Gettler, the board's new vice chairman.

In other business, the board of trustees extended UC President Joseph Steger's contract through June 2002, following an hourlong executive session. Dr. Steger, president since 1984, did not receive a pay raise on his $250,000 annual salary.

Trustees also approved a $28.2 million capital budget for fiscal 1998-99. The state funded all but $183,000 of the budget for seven projects, already under construction.

        Among the projects:

        • Baldwin Hall Rehab Phases I and II ($10.3 million).

        • Baldwin Hall Large Scale Test Facility ($2.4 million).

        • Conversion of part of the Medical Sciences Building for use as a Clinical Skills Lab and student recreation space ($1.3 million).

        • 15 new rooms in Rieveschl Hall. ($1.2 million).

        • One-Stop Services Center to replace Beecher Hall ($8.9 million).

The board also elected Michael Barrett chairman, replacing George Strike whose term recently expired. George Schaefer Jr. was elected secretary.
