They are using telephones and the Internet, and even relayed messages to check on the well-be ing of family and friends.

Mr. Valencia's family survived the disaster, he said.

The Pan-American Society of Greater Cincinnati has gathered donations and worked with Catholic missionaries to help the victims of Hurricane Mitch in Central America.

They met Wednesday night to continue that effort to help Colombia's earthquake victims, said Mr. Valencia, director of activities for the society.

Along with personal donations from members, the Pan-American Society will use a portion of the proceeds from a Latin dance planned for Feb. 6 to benefit the earthquake relief efforts, Mr. Valencia said.

The dance will be at the Shriners Temple at 217 William Howard Taft Road, Mount Auburn.

Costs are $15 for students, $20 for Pan-American members and $25 for non-members. The dance begins at 9 p.m.
