At last, a Turpin auditorium

'We finally have a place of our own'

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

ANDERSON TOWNSHIP — A brand-new auditorium for theater, musical productions and schoolwide assemblies — it sounded so appealing.

But when Turpin High School was built in 1976, cost overruns forced cutbacks. The cafeteria was made smaller. And the auditorium was scrapped.

Twenty-three years later, that's about to change.

The Turpin High School on Sunday will unveil its first auditorium at 1 p.m., when choral and orchestral band members will perform for their parents and other guests. An open house will be held for the public Feb. 7.

The 725-seat auditorium was paid for with a $3 million school issue passed by voters in November 1996. That levy also helped pay to build Nagel Middle School and buy technology equipment throughout Forest Hills Schools District.

“There's just a real tremendous excitement among the entire Turpin community,” Turpin Principal Larry Borcherding said Thursday. “We finally have a place of our own where music and drama groups can perform.”

Previously, the groups resembled touring ensembles, lugging their equipment to Anderson High School's Titus Auditorium or a much smaller facility at Mercer Elementary.

The auditorium also will be available for community functions, Mr. Borcherding said.
