Man pleads not guilty to child porn charges

BY EARNEST WINSTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

William Garvey pleaded not guilty Thursday to 64 federal child pornography charges.

The 78-year-old retired Mount Lookout man stood between his two attorneys as the plea was entered before U.S. Magistrate Timothy Hogan.

The case was referred to U.S. District Court Judge S. Arthur Spiegel. A pretrial hearing was not set Thursday. The lawyers and Mr. Garvey declined comment.

A federal grand jury indicted Mr. Garvey last week on charges of inducing minors — at least six teen-age girls — to pose for child pornography. The investigation began last year, after a teen-age girl told police he had been taking explicit pictures of her and her friends.

Federal authorities searched his home here and his other house in Louisville and seized dozens of Polaroid pictures. Federal prosecutors are handling the case because the photographs were taken across state lines.

Mr. Garvey was given a $100,000 unsecured bond but he must:

        • Attend his pretrial hearing.

        • Restrict travel to Kentucky and southern Ohio.

        • Have no contact with witnesses and victims.

        • Not be alone with anyone under 18 years of age.

        • Not possess any computer equipment.

        • Hand over his passport to authorities.

If convicted, Mr. Garvey faces 10 to 20 years in prison on each of 32 counts of inducing minors and up to 15 years on each of 32 transportation charges.

His 1991 GMC van and 1994 Acura sedan have been seized.
