Fare hikes send airline stocks up
Airline stocks were sent higher Friday after Northwest Airlines Corp. and Delta Air Lines raised full and discount fares.
Stock in Delta, which has its second-largest hub at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, gained $4.433/4 Friday to close at $54.561/4.
Investors were enthusiastic about the news because it likely means that rival carriers will match the increase. Delta was the first to raise prices. Northwest followed suit, touching off optimism among investors that the price increases will stick.
