Public hearing set on possible lawsuit against gun makers

The Cincinnati Enquirer

A possible lawsuit by the city of Cincinnati against gun manufacturers will be the subject of a public hearing at City Hall on Feb. 10.

Councilman Tyrone Yates — one of five Democratic council members who want the city to sue gun manufacturers — said he will invite national and local experts on gun-related violence to testify at the 10 a.m. Feb. 10 hearing in city council chambers.

At Wednesday's council meeting, the five Democrats — a majority on the nine-member city council — introduced a motion calling on the city to file suit, seeking damages from gun manufacturers for the costs associat ed with gun-related homicides and suicides.

Several other American cities have or are about to file suit against the manufacturers, including New Orleans, Chicago, and Miami-Dade County, Fla.

Cincinnati lawyer Stanley Chesley, who has taken on tobacco companies in liability suits, is already involved in the New Orleans lawsuit and has offered to help the city with its case. He will testify at the Feb. 10 hearing.

Cincinnati Mayor Roxanne Qualls, who introduced the motion Wednesday, will be invited to testify as well. The public is also invited.
