Ditch collapse victim in serious condition

[rescue]
Jim Bagwell is pulled free from a ditch Saturday.
| Story of the rescue |
A Price Hill man trapped Saturday in a collapsed ditch was listed in serious condition Sunday evening at University Hospital.

The condition of Jim Bagwell, a 41-year-old contractor, apparently worsened Sunday before improving slightly. He was downgraded Sunday from fair condition to critical and then upgraded to serious by evening, according to officials.

Mr. Bagwell was stuck for more than six hours in a 13-foot trench at 6164 Seiler Drive in Green Township. Rescue workers pulled Mr. Bagwell from the ditch, where he had been helping a friend replace a sewer pipe, about 4 p.m.

Throughout the ordeal, Mr. Bagwell talked with rescue workers and helped dig himself out.
