Mason classes fight intolerance with mosaic

MASON Seventh-grade students in Casey Popplewell's classes at Mason Middle School will spend three weeks preparing an intolerance mosaic in observance of Black History Month.
Working in groups of two or three, the students in Mr. Popplewell's room will spend the first week researching a topic under the theme intolerance. Subjects could include the Montgomery bus boycott, the slave trade or the March on Washington.
The groups must find 20 references to their topics; those become the pieces of the mosaic. At least two of the tiles have to be their own thoughts about what happened and how they might have reacted.
The tiles will be assembled into a symbol chosen by the students to represent their topic.
Sixth-grade students in Ilene Besso's class at Columbia Elementary will make a paper quilt highlighting the accomplishments of African-Americans. Students will pick someone, draw a picture and write a summary on their square. The squares will be combined and hung in the classroom.
At Kings, Lebanon and Mason high schools, English students will study African- American poets. At least one poem will be read and discussed each day among Lynn Molen's freshman English students at Mason High School.
