Special election today on school bond issue

MIDDLETOWN With just one issue on today's special election ballot in Butler and Warren counties, election officials are predicting a good turnout unless it rains.
About 32,744 registered voters in Butler County and 1,364 in Warren County will be asked to approve a $97.4 million bond issue put on the ballot by the Middletown/Monroe Board of Education.
There's been a lot of controversy and a lot of discussion on this issue, said Bob Mosketti, director of the Butler County Board of Elections. I'm looking for a good turnout unless it rains. People don't want to go out in the rain to vote.
With dry weather, about 25 percent to 30 percent of registered voters can be expected to cast ballots, Mr. Mosketti said. Out of 475 absentee ballots requested, 404 have been returned, he said. Typically, 1,000 to 1,500 would have been requested and returned the day before.
It's been very slow, Mr. Mosketti said. Maybe everybody wants to go to the polls.
The polls will be open in both counties from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The money from the 5.95-mill bond issue would be used to repair or rebuild schools and improve instruction.
If approved, the owner of a house with a market value of $100,000 would pay $187 in new taxes each year for 29 years.
